Rollins update: Furcal signs 2-year deal

December 10, 2011

stltoday.com
Shortstop Rafael Furcal has agreed to a two-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals were a possible suitor for Jimmy Rollins , especially after the departure of Albert Pujols, but they were not willing to offer Rollins the five-year contract that he has been demanding, according to MLBTradeRumors.com.

The signing of the 34-year old Furcal narrows down the market for Rollins even more. Rollins' situation is getting very close to, not if he will resign with the Phillies, but when.

The Milwaukee Brewers were also interested in Rollins, but backed off their pursuit midway through the week when it was reported that Rollins was likely to rejoin the Phillies. They signed Alex Gonzalez to a one-year deal instead.

Amaro, Lozano to discuss Rollins today

December 10, 2011

mlbtraderumors.com
MLBTradeRumors.com is reporting that GM Ruben Amaro Jr. will meet with Jimmy Rollins' agent Dan Lozano today.

The news was originally reported by ESPN's Jerry Crasnick via Twitter.

"Jimmy Rollins agent Dan Lozano is expected to have a talk with GM Ruben Amaro on Saturday."

- Jerry Crasnick

gsmdome.com
MLBTradeRumors.com is also reporting that the St. Louis Cardinals are progressing in making a deal with shortstop Rafael Furcal.

The Cardinals were rumored to have interest in Rollins, but now it seems that they have their attention focused on bringing back Furcal.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported this news, originally, via Twitter as well.

"  Source: making progress on deal with Furcal. Rules out another suitor for Rollins. "

-    Ken Rosenthal

With the Cardinals now probably out of the running, the Phillies have a great oppurtunity to make more progress with Rollins, and possibly even re-sign him in the very near future.

Phils make some more minor league deals

December 10, 2011

The Phillies picked up three more minor leaguers on Friday.

Pitchers Dave Bush, David Purcey, and catcher Steven Lerud have been signed to minor league contracts with invites to sprin training.

Winter meetings wrap up

December 9, 2011

The winter meetings are over, here is what you may have missed.

Madson doesn't take arbitration

Ryan Madson did not accept the Phillies arbitration offer, as he is still looking to be a closer for another team.

Madson can still negotiate with the Phillies as a free agent if he chooses to do so, but if he rejected arbitration, he probably will not re-join the team.

The Phillies will get two picks in the 2012 draft when Madson signs with another team, as a result of the arbitration offer.

Nix officially signs contract

Laynce Nix passed his physical, and is now a member of the Philadelphia Phillies for the next two years.

Phillies sit out on Rule 5 Draft

The Phillies did not make any picks in the Rule 5 Draft, losing a few minor leaguers in the process.

The Chicago Cubs took RHP Lendy Castillo, who has to be on the Cub's 25 man roster for all of 2012, or he will be sent back to the Phillies. The Baltimore Orioles took LHP Andrew Loomis, the Cinncinati Reds took shortstop Travis Mattair, and the Pittsburgh Pirates took catcher Francisco Diaz. These players were taken in the minors phase and willn jot have to be offered back if they are not in the majors.

Rollins update

Because I haven't mentioned it already. The Anaheim Angels (I refuse to refer to them as the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim, it's longer than it needs to be) are stacked. They have Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson now.

Wilson gone hurts the Ranger's rotation, but Pujols gone really hurts the Cardinal's lineup.

But now that they don't have Pujols, the Cardinals have money they can spend.

Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki thinks they just might use it at shortstop.

Zolecki reports on the Phillie's website that if the Cardinals don't chase after Prince Fielder, they could go for Rollins.

It was reported during the winter meetings that Rollins already agreed to terms with the Phillies, but that was later proven false. However, it was proven that the Phillies have made progress with Rollins, and that it was likely that he will resign.

Since then, there hasn't been much else other than speculation.

Stark: Rollins has not agreed to terms yet

December 7, 2011

MLB Network's intentional talk reported that Jimmy Rollins has agreed to terms with the Phillies, which would continue his tenure in Philadelphia.

However, Jayson Stark reported via Twitter that no such agreement has been made.

"Sources denying reports of any agreement with Jimmy Rollins"
- Jayson Stark, @ jaysonst

In other news, it was reported earlier today that the Phillies were looking to trade with Oakland for starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez.

MLBTradeRumors.com' Steve Adams is now reporting that the A's are not interested in trading Gonzalez, at least not at the winter meetings.

Though it is not happening now, had the Phillies tried to acquire Gonzalez, it was reported that they would have sent pitchers Joe Blanton or Kyle Kendrick to the Athletics in exchange.

Phillies backing off Ramirez, Polanco not being shopped

December 7, 2011

The Phillies seem to be backing off on the pursuit of Aramis Ramirez.

According to Luke Adams of MLBTradeRumors.com, the Phillies are no longer trying to shop their current third baseman Placido Polanco, while looking to sign Ramirez to take over at third.

This indicates that the Phillies are confident that they will be able to re-sign Jimmy Rollins at short, as the interest in Ramirez, and the possible trade of Polanco was dependant on if Rollins decided to re-sign with Philadelphia.

Phils interested in Gio Gonzalez

December 7, 2011

The Phillies have a dominant rotation, obvious fact. But with a rotation of Halladay, Lee, and Hamels, and Worley, you would think that starting pitching would not be anything the Phillies would be looking to improve at the moment.

Well it turns out they are.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Phillies are one of the dozen teams interested in acquiring lefty starter Gio Gonzalez from the Oakland A's.

Rosenthal reports that the Phillies want to have a back-up plan, just in case they are unable to sign Cole Hamels when he hits free agency after the 2012 season, or if they decide to shop Hamels at the trade deadline.

Gonzalez, 26, went 16-12, with a 3.12 ERA in 32 starts with A's in 2011. He is 38-32 with a 3.93 ERA in his four year career so far.

Hamels is one year older than Gonzalez, and had a slightly better 2011 (14-9, 2.79 ERA).

Even so, Gonzalez would be a another great starter to have in the rotation, and his acquistion (if it happens) would make the rotation even better than last year's, consisting of Halladay, Lee, Hamels, and Oswalt.

And if the Phillies cannot hold on to Hamles after the season, which I hope they can, Gonzalez would be more than capable of taking the third spot in the rotation.

Phillies eyeing Sherrill

December 6, 2011

It looks like the Phillies are interested in adding another left-hander to their bullpen to go with Antonio Bastardo.

Phillies beat writer Tood Zolecki reports that the organization is interested in free agent reliever George Sherrill.

The Phillies did pursue Sherrill last year in free agency, but he opted to sign with Atlanta.

GM Ruben Amaro Jr. told Zolecki that acquiring Sherrill is, "Possible. Not probable, but possible. A lot of the things are contingent on what happens with Jimmy [Rollins]."

And of course it all leads back to J-Roll.

Gillick met with Ramirez, Madson to accept arbitration?

December 6, 2011

CSN Philly.com's Jim Salisbury is reporting that the Phillie's interest in Aramis Ramirez goes back to about a month ago.

Pat Gillick, the team's front office adviser, met with Ramirez in the Dominican Republic.

Gillick, as Salisbury reports, likes to get to know players before he starts negotiating with them, a method that he passed on to Ruben Amaro Jr. when he became general manger.

Salisbury reports that Ramirez is looking for a three-year deal, which the Phillies were looking to offer Rollins.

With Rollins not willing to budge on five-years, Ramirez is gaining a lot more speculation, considering that the Phillies have interest, and he is looking for a deal that they are willing to give.

Read Salisbury's article at http://www.csnphilly.com/baseball-philadelphia-phillies/news/Gillick-met-with-Aramis-Ramirez?blockID=606882&feedID=693

In other news, CSNPhilly.com's John Finger speculates that Ryan Madson may possibly accept arbitration from the Phillies, before the deadline on Wednesday.

Though plenty of teams are in need of a closer right now, Madson still has not found one.

Rumors are showing up that Madson may rejoin the Phillies for this season, then try free-agency again next year.

If in fact that does happen, Madson would be back in the set up role, because Jonathan Papelbon will be the closer.

Also, if that does happen, tyhat is going to be one good bullpen.

Free Agency Recap

December 5, 2011

Laynce Nix agrees to two-year deal

The Phillies signed free agent left fielder Laynce Nix to a two-year deal pending a physical. The contract is worth $2.5 million.

Nix, 31, hit .250 with 16 homers, and 44 RBI's, in 124 games with the Nationals in 2011.

The signing of the eight year veteran most likely means that Phillies no longer have any interest in Michael Cuddyer, who they were reported to have been actively pursuing since the start of free agency. It also ends any consideration of bringing back Raul Ibanez.

Though nothing is confirmed, it seems likely that Nix, who is a left-handed bat, will platoon with John Mayberry Jr. based on the opposing pitcher on the given day.

Rollins situation gains more uncertainty

GM Ruben Amaro Jr. met with Jimmy Rollins' agent Dan Lozano to talk about negotiations for resigning the shortstop.

However, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, is reporting that the meeting did not go all that well.

Rollins is reportedly not budging on wanting a five-year deal, and the Phillies are not budging on giving him no more than three-years.

The Miami Marlin's recent signing of Jose Reyes probably does not help the situation. Reyes received six-years for $106 million.

Rollins is probably more dedicated to getting a five-year deal now, seeing that he knows what he might be able to get money wise.

Phillies pursuing Aramis Ramirez

This is related to the situation with J-Roll.

According to Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki, the Phillies are seriously-pursuing free agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez.

As of right now, it seems that the Phillies feel like they will not be able to resign Rollins, so they are starting to look elsewhere.

Zolecki mantains the fact that if signed, Ramirez would still play third base. Multiple sources are reporting that the organization is shopping current third baseman Placido Polanco, to free up room for Ramirez.

But if that is the case, then there is still a hole at shortstop. According to Zolecki, the Freddy Galvis era could be ushered in a little bit earlier than expected, or there is the option of signing Alex Gonzalez.

Ramirez, 33, hit .306, with 26 home runs, and 93 RBI's in 149 games last year for the Cubs.

Rollins, 33, hit .268, with 16 home runs, and 63 RBI's in 142 games for the Phillies in 2011.

Gonzalez, 34, hit .241, with 15 home runs, and 56 RBI's in 149 gmaes for the Braves last year.,

Galvis, the Phillies minor league player of the year, is hitting .238 in 122 at-bats in Venezuelan winter ball.

There would be a clear downgrade if the Phillies failed to resign Rollins, or bring in Ramirez. Especially with Galvis, who has yet to play at the Major League level.

Though things with Rollins do not seem good right now, Zolecki did write something encouraging.

"Of course, everything can change quickly. The deals for Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee in recent offseasons each died on several occasions before becoming official. The same could happen with Rollins. They might seem far apart Monday, but things could close quickly with a productive phone call later in the week."

Rollin's agent to meet with Amaro

December 3, 2011

Dan Lozano
Jimmy Rollins' agent, Dan Lozano, told CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury that he will have a face-to-face meeting with Phillie's general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. at the winter meetings, which begin Monday in Dallas.

News on the Phillie's shortstop situation, and even news on the entire free agent market itself has been scarce, since free agency began.

However, things should start heating up on Monday, and Rollins could be the one to spark the fire.

After adressing the closer situation with the signing of Jonathan Papelbon, and strengthening the bench with Jim Thome and Ty Wigginton, the Phillies taking care of short was next on the list.

Rollins, 33, is probably the organizations most appealing option. He's been in Philadelphai for 11 years and expressed interest in coming back. The only problem is that Rollins is very driven to get a five-year deal.

This may cause a problems in negotiations. Amaro has shown that he is not willing to give the veteran shortstop a deal of that length, and is looking for more of a three year type deal.

The San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves are teams that have been rumored to have interest in Rollins, but there has been nothing to confirm these rumors.

Now, Salisbury is reporting that the Brewers, Tigers, and Cardinals could have interest. The Cardinals's interest would most likely hinge on whether or not they can resign Albert Pujols (that's going to take a lot of money to do).

Options outside of Rollins are Jose Reyes, 28, and Alex Gonzalez, 34.

Reyes has met with Amaro in Philadelphia already, but it would cost a lot to bring him considering the $90 million that the Miami Marlins are looking to sign him for.

Gonzalez would be cheaper option, but he is a year older than Rollins and would not add anyhting to the offensive side. The Giants are also looking into Gonzalez according to Salisbury.

The winter meetings will surely be an interesting one for the Phillies. They clearly want to address the situation at shortstop, but how they will do it is unclear yet.

We will have to see how Lozano's meeting with Amaro goes, to see if the Phillies will move forward with trying to bring back Rollins, or if they will look elsewhere.

Players signed to minor league contracts

November 30, 2011

Pitchers Scott Elarton, Brian Sanches, Pat Misch, Raul Valdes, catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, infielders Pete Orr, Kevin Frandsen, and outfielder Scott Podsednik have been signed to minor league contracts by the Phillies, according to beat writer Todd Zolecki.

These moves won't create a big splash (in fact, they make a very little one at that), but they could help during the course of the season.

These players can be called up and fill in positions should the Phillies need to add players to the roster.

Orr already has experience playing infield for the Phillies in 2010 and 2011.

Podsednik, 35, has 10 years of experience on the major league level. He hit .297 in 39 games for the Dodgers in 2010. That was the last time he played in the majors.

Podsednik played in the Phillies minor league system last year, but was limited to just 14 games with Lehigh Valley.

He can play anywhere in the outfield, so, if needed, he can provide more depth off the bench.

The rest of the players on the list have little major league experience, but all of them have invitations to spring training.

Mathieson headed east

According to John Finger of CSNPhilly.com, the Phillies released right-hander Scott Mathieson.

The reliever is to sign a deal with the Yomuri Giants, so he will be heading to Asia.

Pence happy about Wigginton trade

November 22, 2011

Hunter Pence seems very happy about the trade that brought former teammate Ty Wigginton to the Phillies, just look at his Twitter posts.

Hunter Pence
Just got back from Cabo to hear we traded for one of my favorite teammates! Wiggy! Aka pound red bull.

Hunter Pence
He's really just "Wiggy," but he pounds red bull and is a really fun teammate and very knowledgeable baseball savvy guy.

Sounds like the Phillies picked up a good baseball mind, and someone who will be right at home inside the clubhouse. Also sounds like the Phillies got a player that really likes Red Bull.

Wigginton spent part of the 2007 season and the entire 2008 season playing for the Houston Astros.

New CBA agreement reached, NL and AL MVPs

November 22, 2011

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have reached a new 5-year labor agreement on Tuseday, which gives Major League Baseball a span of 21 years of labor peace.

The new agreement brings some notable rule changes on free agents, the draft,  drug testing, social media use for players, and the postseason format.

Here are some of the most notable ones:

It appears that, as early as next season, there will be two wild card teams who will play in a one game series to advance to the division series.

Instant replay will expand to calls on fair or foul balls, but calls on the bases still cannot be reviewed.

Also, the Houston Astros will move from the NL Central to the AL West in 2013, but tat was agreed to by the owners earlier.

You can read the full details on the new CBA at MLB.com by clicking on the link below.

Braun wins NL MVP, Verlander wins in AL

It was really just a two horse race for NL MVP. Milwaukee Brewer's left fielder Ryan Braun and Los Angeles Dodger's center fielder Matt Kemp were the only two players in the race to finish with 300 points in the voting.

But in the end, Braun came out on top.

Braun batted .332 with 33 home runs, 111 RBI's, a .397 on base percentage, and a .597 slugging percentage. He received 20 1st place votes, and 12 2nd place votes for 388 points.

Kemp batted .324, with 39 home runs, 126 RBI's, a .399 on base percentage, and a .586 slugging percentage. He received 10 1st place votes, 16 2nd place votes, and 6 3rd plce votes.

Compared to Braun, Kemp had the edge statistically, but the vote probably was decided on the fact that Braun helped his team win the NL Central, and get to the NLCS.

Braun is the first Brewer to win an MVP award since Robin Yount won his second in 1989.

In the American League, Detroit Tiger's starting pitcher  Justin Verlander was awarded MVP a week after winning the AL Cy Young Award.

Verlander is the first starting pitcher to win AL MVP since Roger Clemens did it in 1986.

Verlander received 13 1st place votes, and had 280 total points. Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury finished in second with 242 points, but only 4 1st place votes.

There was the arguement that a pitcher should not win MVP, but when you look at Verlander's stats, it's easy to disprove it.

Verlander was absolutely dominant in 2011, leading the Majors in wins (24), strikeouts (250), and ERA (2.40). Oh yeah, and he threw a no-hitter.

Cuddyer still option, 'slow' talks with Rollins

November 21, 2011

The Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon, and acquired Ty Wigginton. Now the Phillies biggest issue is to address the hole at shortstop.

According to MLBTradeRumors.com, the Phillies have had discussions with Jimmy Rollins, but GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said that talks have been "slow", and that a deal, most likely, will not get done until after the winter meetings.

The site also reports that signing Michael Cuddyer is still a possibility for the Phillies, but it would have to be for a deal that is team friendly.

Here is MLBTradeRumors.com report:

"
  • Having signed Jonathan Papelbon and traded for Wigginton, the Phillies' primary focus is now filling shortstop, according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. The Phils are "in negotiations" with Rollins, Salisbury reports, as well as other free-agent shortstops. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. characterized talks with Rollins as "slow" and said that he doesn't expect to have a shortstop signed by the outset of the Winter Meetings on Dec. 5.
  • The Phils remain in search of an outfielder, according to Salisbury, so it's possible that they could still sign Michael Cuddyer, although it'd probably have to be on team-friendly terms."

  • Development staff announced, Sandberg staying

    November 21, 2011

The Phillies announced their player development staff for the 2012 season. Ryne Sandberg is listed as the manager for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (Triple-A affiliate).

Sandberg has had talks with the St. Louis Cardinals about their managing job, but they filled it with Mike Matheny. The Cubs had an opening too, but they wanted Major League coaching experience, something Sandberg does not have.

Now, it is official. Sandberg will remain in the Phillie's minor league system for now.

You can see the full list of the development staff at CSNPhilly.com, by clicking on the link.

    Phils acquire Ty Wigginton

    November 20, 2011

The Phillies traded for utility player Ty Wigginton from the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies will either receive cash or a player to be named later.

Wigginton, 34, hit .242, with 15 home runs, and 47 RBI's, in 130 games for Colorado in 2011. He has a .265 average for his 10 season long career.

On the defensive side, Wigginton played games at first base, third base, left field, and right field, last season. He also has experience at second base.

Wigginton is signed for the 2012 season for $4 million, but the Rockies are paying half of his salary, so the Phillies only have to pay $2 million.  Their is als an option year for 2013 in Wigginton's contract that is also worht $4 million.

Before the trade, it was reported that the Phillies were actively pursuing free agent Michael Cuddyer, for much of the same reasons they acquired Wigginton. But now, it is easy to argue that the Phillies will no longer pursue Cuddyer.

Cuddyer, 33, is a better offensive player, but the price to sign him may have been too steep for the organization, after the signing of closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Wigginton does not quite match the stats of Cuddyer, but is a far more affordable option, and should still be a good addition regardless.

The trade was reported by MLBTradeRumors.com.

    Prospects added to 40-man roster

    November 18, 2011

The Phillies added four players to their minor league system to protect them from being in the Rule 5 Draft next month.

Righthander Phillippe Aumont, lefthander Jake Diekman, outfielder Tyson Gillies, and cathcer Sebastian Valle.

Aumont (22) and Gillies (23) were prospects aquired in 2009, in the trade that sent Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners (Remember how much that one hurt? But he is back with the Phillies, so it all worked out).

Diekman (25), according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, has some control issues, but cna develop into a situational or full inning reliever.

Valle (21), is the Phillie's top catching prospect.

Big 3 finish in top 5, Schneider signs deal

    November 17, 2011

Los Angeles Dodger's pitcher Clayton Kershaw won the NL Cy Young Award, but the voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America clearly shows (as if you needed any other proof) that the Phillies rotation dominated the regular season.

Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels all finished in the top five in voting.

Halladay (19-6, 2.35 ERA) came in 2nd place with 4 1st place votes, 21 2nd place votes, and 7 3rd place votes for 133 points.

Lee (17-8, 2.40 ERA) finished right behind him in 3rd place, with 5 2nd place votes, 17 3rd place votes, 9 4th place votes, and 1 5th place vote for 90 points.

Hamels (14-9, 2.79 ERA) took 5th place with 2 4ht place votes, and 13 5ht place votes, for 17 points.

Kershaw (21-5, 2.28 ERA) won the award with 27 1st place votes, 3 2nd place votes, and 2 3rd place votes, for 207 points.

    The Arizona Diamondback's Ian Kennedy (21-4, 2.88 ERA) came in 4th with 1 1st place vote, 3 2nd place votes,  6 3rd place votes, 18 4th place votes, and 3 5th place votes for 76 points.

Detroit Tiger's ace Justin Verlander (25-4, 2.40 ERA) won the AL Cy Young, but no surprise there, considering his dominance in 2011. The question with him is if he can win the AL MVP.

    Schneider signs one year deal

Brian Schneider will back up Carlos Ruiz for another year.

Schneider signed a one-year, $800,000 deal with incentives that can make the deal worth $1 million in total, according to CSNPhilly.com's John Finger.

Schneider (35) will most likely continue catching for Vance Worley. The 12 year veteran has worked well with Worley playing a key part in the young pitcher's success thus far.

Hamels has to be addressed later

    November 15, 2011

Cole Hamels will be a free agent next year, but with the signing of Jonathan Papelbon and with the needs at shortstop, possibly left field, and definitely hitting still needed to be addressed, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. is in no rush to make offers to Hamels now.

Amaro spoke to CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury at the winter meetings. You can read Salisbury's article on the disscussion by clicking the link below.

    Sandberg probably staying put
The Cardinals hired Mike Matheny to be their new manager, and the Cubs want someone who already has major-league coaching experience to manage their team.

So it looks like Phillie's minor-league manager Ryne Sandberg will be staying with the orginization.

Manuel finishes 4th in Manager of the Year voting

    November 16, 2011

Charlie Manuel finished fourth in the National League Manager of the Year voting.

Manuel received one 2nd place vote and seven 3rd place votes for 10 points.

Diamondback's manager Kirk Gibson won the award in the NL, with 28 1st place votes and four 2nd place votes for 152 total points.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke (92 points), and (now former) Cardinals manager Tony La Russa (24 points) finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Tampa Bay Ray's manager Joe Maddon won the voting in the AL, with 26 1st place votes and one 2nd place vote for 133 points.

Both Maddon and Gibson managed their teams to comebacks that landed them a spot in the postseason.

Gibson's Diamondbacks took control of the NL West in August and kept it through September, after the San Francisco Giants were in first for a good part of the summer.

Maddon's Rays made their comeback at the end of the season, taking the AL Wild Card spot from the Boston Red Sox, after Boston suffered a historic collapse.

Phils make deal, close to another

    November 16, 2011

According to CSNPhilly.com's  Jim Salisbury, the Phillies have acquired minor-league reliever Adam Worthington from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The acquisition completes a trade that sent reliever Mike Zagurski to Arizona back in September.

The 24 year old Worhtington was the Diamondbacks 20th round pick in the 2009 draft.

Salisbury is also reporting that the Phillies are close to re-signing catcher Brian Schneider.

The deal could be announced over the next day or so.

Schneider has often been credited for doing a goos job catching for Vance Worley in 2011, so it looks like the Phils want to continue that success.

Cespedes has private workout with Phillies

    November 16, 2011

CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury is reporting that the Phillies held a private workout for Yoenis Cespedes on Tuesday.

Former GM Pat Gillick attended the workout in place of Ruben Amaro Jr., who was in Milwaukee for the winter meetings.

Cespedes is a 26 year old Cuban free agent. He is unproven at the Major League level, but is labeled with a $30 million asking price.

The organization has a history of looking at big name free agents. However, it is extremely unlikely that the club will land Cespedes, mainly for the high asking price and the uncertainty that he will be able to live up to the contract.

    Papelbon signs deal with Phils

    November 14, 2011

Closer Jonathan Papelbon signed to a four-year $50 million contract on Monday with the Phillies. The contract includes a fifth year option, but he must close 55 games in the fourth year of the contract in order for the option to be available.

The option year is worth $13 million.

Papelbon was a very good and reliable closer during his tenure with the Red Sox. The expectation is that he will do much of the same in Philadelphia, and help them stay as a playoff contender.

Worley finishes third in Rookie of the Year race

Pitcher Vance Worley finished third in the voting for National League Rookie of the Year.

Worley did not receive any first place votes, but got eight second place, and 16 third place votes for a total of 40 points in the voting.

Worley became one of the Phillies biggest surprises in 2011. "The Vanimal" settled in as the fifth starter and finished the season with an 11-3 record with a 3.01 ERA in 21 starts.

Atlanta Brave's closer Craig Kimbrel won the NL Rookie of the Year with 32 first place votes for a total of 160 points.

Tampa Bay Ray's starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson won the award in the American League.

Papelbon agrees to sign with Phillies

    November 11, 2011

    * I would like to say I am sorry for not posting anyhting yesterday. I had a lot of school work to get out of the way, and unfortuantely that left me with no time to update the blog. Luckily, there was only one big story to cover, so let's get to right to it.

Closer Jonathan Papelbon has agreed to sign a four-year deal wih the Philadelphia Phillies, pending a physical.

Papelbon's contract is reportedly worth close to $50 million, according to CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury.

The 31 year old closer has spent all six seasons of his career with the Boson Red Sox. First as a strater in 2005, then becoming a closer in 2006. He was part of Boston's 2007 World Series Championship.

In 2011, Papelbon had 31 saves in 63 games, with a 2.94 ERA.

The Red Sox will get the Phillie's first round pick for next year's draft, since Papelbon is a type A free agent.

Multiple sources reported earlier in the week that the Phillies and their free agent closer Ryan Madson had already agreed to a four-year, $44 million deal. But it turned out that both sides never reached an agreement.

Now that Papelbon is the Phillie's closer, Madson probably will not be back with Philadelphia for the 2012 season. It has been a great run for Madson, here in Philadelphia, but it looks like Madson will be in a different uniform come the start of the season.

    Madson deal delayed, creates confusion

    November 9, 2011

It was reported early this morning that the Phillies were close to signing Ryan Madson to a four-year deal, but now multiple sources are reporting many different reasons for why the deal was either delayed or called off. Some are even saying that the Phillies have not made an offer to Madson yet, and that Jonathan Papelbon is still in the mix
The link below will take you to MLBTradeRumors.com, where you can read all the reports for the delay in the Madson deal.

Madson agrees to 4-year deal, pending approval

    November 9, 2011

Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman posted on his Twitter account that closer Ryan Madson agreed to a four year, $44 million deal with the Phillies, and that the contract is awaiting CEO Daivd Montgomery's approval.

Here is Heyman's tweet on his account @SI_JonHeyman

"madson, phillies gm have agreed on $44 mil, 4-yr deal. but deal has been awaiting philly ceo montgomery' OK for over a day"

Heyman posted the tweet early Wedenesday morning, which means the deal could have possibly been agreed to late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

Heyman posted another tweet around the same time, saying that general manger Ruben Amaro Jr. is still awaiting approval.

"after amaro agreed to $44M, 4-yr madson deal, amaro said he'd have to get montgomery's OK, source said. still waiting."

Jim Duquette of MLB.com, reported that the deal Madson agreed to could have a fifth year option.

All the terms of the contract should be revealed as soon as Madson's deal is approved.

Terms of possible Madson deal revealed

    November 8, 2011

Jim Duquette of MLB.com is reporting that the Phillies have a four year, $44 million deal in the works for closer Ryan Madson.

Phillie's beta writer Todd Zolecki reports that the deal could be finalized by the end of this week.

Numerous sources have already said that discussions between Madson and the Phillies have heated up, and Scott Boras, Madson's agent, has said already that Madson is comfortable in Philadelphia and wants to stay with the team.

Madson and shortstop Jimmy Rollins are who the Phillie's made their to priorities to re-sign over the off-season. If this deal falls through, the orginization can check Madson off their to-do list.

Phils negotiating with Papelbon, Cuddyer visits

    November 8, 2011

Reports were made that disscusions between Ryan Madson and the Phillies were heating up and that it was possible that a deal could be agreed upon very soon.
According to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, free agent closer Jonathan Papelbon is in the mix now.

Salisbury reports that the club is negotiating with Papelbon, Boston's closer for six seasons, along with Madson. He also reports that a deal could be made with one of the two closers very soon (possibly within the next few days).

You can read Salisbury's report by clicking on the link below.
    http://www.csnphilly.com/baseball-philadelphia-phillies/news/Phillies-close-to-striking-deal-with-a-c?blockID=590458&feedID=693

Salisbury is also reporting that free agent Michael Cuddyer was in Philadelphia on Tuesday for a recruiting visit with the Phillies.

Cuddyer is a good right-handed bat, who can play at multiple positions (like I've said so many times before).  He is very close with Jim Thome (recently signed by the Phillies), after their time as teammates in Minnesota, and he would be a very good fit for the team (again, like I've said so many times before).

Sources confirmed to Salisbury that the Phillies are "eager to sign him," but it is unknown if Cuddyer was presented an offer.

For Salisbury's report on Cuddyer, click on the link below.

Madson, Phillies pushing for a deal

    November 8, 2011

Multiple sources are reporting that the Phillies and free agent closer Ryan Madson are close to making an agreement.

Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman is reporting that the two sides are working on a multiyear deal. Heyman also wrote that it seems likely now that the Phillies will hold on to their closer a little bit longer.

Phillie's beat writer Todd Zolecki has also reported that discussions between Madson and the Phillies have heated up, and that a possible agreement could be near.

MLB.com and local awards handed out, more to be announced

    November 7, 2011

Individual awards were given out by the MLB.com editors for the Phillies, as well as the orginization's annual franchise awards, that are voted on by the Philadelphia chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
MLB.com awarded first baseman Ryan Howard as the Phillie's Player of the Year.

Pitcher Roy Halladay was chosen as the team's Pitcher of the Year, and fellow pitcher Vance Worley was awarded with Breakout Player of the Year.

The Phillies named center fielder Shane Victorino their MVP and honored him with the Mike Schmidt Award.

Cliff Lee was named the team's most valuable pitcher in winning the Steve Carlton Award.

This news was reported by the Phillie's website, and there is still more awards to be given across Major League Baseball, including Manager of the year (Charlie Manuel is a nomination), Rookie of the Year (Vance Worley is a nomination), and the Cy Young Award (Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee are nominated).

    Madson, Phils having "good dialogue"

    November 6, 2011

The Phillies would love to have Ryan Madson back as closer in 2012, and Madson would love to come back to Philadelphia himself.

Madson's agent Scott Boras said, “There are multiple clubs" interested in Madson.

Boras also said that Madson is very interested in re-signing with the Phillies, and that both sides have been speaking to one another.

“We’re having good dialogue with the Phillies. I think Philadelphia is a place he’s comfortable with. It’s a good team. A great place to play. They are a strong candidate on his list.”

Boras refused to reveal if the Phillies or any other teams have made any offers to Madson yet.

    Phillies pursuing Michael Cuddyer

    November 4, 2011

The Phillies signed Jim Thome, but now a teammate of his from Minnesota, could possibly be going to Philadelphia with him.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com is reporting that the Phillies are in serious pursuit of Michael Cuddyer.

This makes a lot of sense for the Phillies to go after him.

Cuddyer is a good right handed bat, that would fit well into the Phillies lineup.

Cuddyer can also play at multiple positions if needed. Last year he played games at first base, second base, and left field for the Twins, so he will be able to fill in for Howard at first if he will not be ready for the start of the season, or play at third if Polanco needs rest. If not, he can also platoon with John Mayberry Jr.in left field if that is what the Phillies are planning.

Salisbury said that the signing of Thome can help the Phillies in signing Cuddyer, they both played together the past two seasons in Minnesota, before Thome was claimed off waivers by the Indians.

Thats the only information presented right now, I will keep you updated when more details become available.

Thome returns Philadelphia, signs 1 year deal

    November 4, 2011

Jim Thome is coming back to Philadelphia.

The Phillies have signed the 600 home run club member to a one year deal that is reportedly worth $1.25 million. Thome's contract is pending a physical.

In 2011, Thome spent the season with the Minnesota Twins, then was claimed off trade waivers by the Cleveland Indians after the trade deadline.

Thome hit for a .256 average, with 15 home runs, and 50 RBI's total last season. He also hit his 600th home run and finished the season with 604 total career home runs.

With this signing, the Phillies have a left-handed power bat that they can use off the bench. In addition, Thome can play at first base if needed, in the event that Ryan Howard is not ready in time for the start of the season.

Thome played for the Phillies from 2003-2005. During the 2005 off-season, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox, since Ryan Howard was ready to takeover as the starting first baseman.

Re-signing with Philadelphia also means that Thome will be re-united with his former hitting from early in his career with the Indinas, except now he will be his manager, Charlie Manuel.

Pete Orr signs minor league contract

    November 2, 2011

Yeah, really not a whole lot to say on this one.

The Phillies will hold on to Pete Orr, he agreed to a minor league contract on Thursday.

Orr will most likely jump between Triple-A Lehigh Valley and the Phillies, like he has done for the past two years with Philadelphia.

Not the most exciting move out there (I mean just look at how I wrote this story), but its something to talk about.

Members of coaching staff and front office looking to move up

    November 2, 2011

Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin was the first person to be interviewed for the job as the Boston Red Sox's manager, after Terry Francona was fired for the Red Sox's collapse in September.

Recently, the St. Louis Cardinals have asked the Phillies for permission to speak with Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg about their own mangerial vacancy since Tony La Russa retired after the Cardinal's improbable World Series championship (that hurts to type).

It is reported that the Cardinals have been granted permission by Phillies to talk to Sandberg, who is a hall of fame player (played for the Phillies and St. Louis' rival Chicago Cubs) and a minor league manger for the Phils since 2007.

Now reports are being made that general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.'s assistant Scott Proefrock will have an interview with the Baltimore Orioles for their general manger position, that was formely filled by Andy McPhail.

Proefrock spent three years as Baltimore's director of baseball administration before joining the Phillies in 2009.

Polanco wins 3rd career Gold Glove

    November 2, 2011

Phillie's third baseman Placido Polanco won his third career Gold Glove award on Tuesday.

In 115 games this season, Polanco had a .977 fielding percentage, which was good enough to win him the best fielding performance at third base.

Polanco won his two previous Gold Gloves with the Detroit Tigers in 2007 and 2009 playing at second base. He is the second player in Major League history to win a Gold Glove at two or more positions, joining Darren Erstad in the exclusive club.

    Off-season notes

    October 31, 2011

The 2011 season has come to a close, and free agency will start on Thursday. Here are the off-season problems that the Phillies will have to face over the winter.

Free Agents: Shortstop Jimmy Rollins and closer Ryan Madson are the big free agents. There is also smaller names on the list like Roy Oswalt, Brad Lidge, and Ross Gload.

Rollins wants five years and he has already said he will not be giving any home time discount, which puts the Phillies in a very tough spot.
Ryan Madson's status with Philadelphia is not much better. Madson is looking for the big pay check, and with Scott Boras as his agent, it would not be surprising if he finds it elsewhere. Washington is a rumored team, seeing as reports were made that Jayson Werth (a former Phil who also went for the money) is trying to sell Madson on joining him in Washington.

The Phillies denied the options on the contracts of both Brad Lidge and Roy Oswalt. The club denied their options primarily for the money they would be owed if they were kept for the 2012 season. Ruben Amaro Jr. has expressed interest in bringing them back next season, so it is possible that one or possibly both can return to the team with contracts that are more affordable for the Phillies.

Ross Gload probably won't be on the Phillies next season. Gload is still suffering from a bad hip, and he has refused to get surgery on it due to the risks that come with the surgery. Gload will most likely find other ways to treat his hip. Again, it isn't likely that Amaro will bring him back, but it still does not mean a return will be ruled out entirley.

Arbitration: Cole Hamels is eligible for arbitration, getting him a new deal will most likely be the Phillies top priority, especially after Hamels finished the season with a 14-9 record and a 2.79 ERA.
In the postseason, Hamels turned in a solid outing against the Cardinals that ended in a 3-2 win for the Phillies.

Third Base: Placido Polanco has been struggling with injuries since he rejoined the Phillies for the 2010 season. In 2010, Polanco had an elbow injury that bothered him for much of the second half of the season. In 2011, Polanco had a sports hernia. He played through it, but there were times where he had to sit out to avoid aggravating the injury. If the rumors that the Phillies are looking to upgrade at third base are true, then there are two very good options out there. David Wright is a name that has been tossed around, but the Mets would likely want a lot for him, especially if he is going to be traded within the division. The other interesting name out there is Michael Cuddyer. This year for Minnesota, Cuddyer played games at first, second, and left field. It would not be difficult for the Phillies coaching staff to turn him into a third baseman, should the team offer him a good deal. Cuddyer is also a fairly good hitter and can add more consistency along with Hunter Pence to the lineup, which is something that has plagued the team's hitting for the past two years.

Left Field: Raul Ibanez will not be re-signed, so the Phillies need a replacement in left. Again, Michael Cuddyer is a very good player to fill the spot. John Mayberry Jr. is also a candidate for the left fielder's job. Mayberry played in 104 games in 2011, and finished the year with a .273 average, 15 home runs, and 49 RBI's. There are questions about whether or not Mayberry can be an everyday player, but based off of what has been seen of Mayberry this year, he appears to be more than capable of getting the job done.

First Base: Ryan Howard tore his achillies, and right now, it is uncertain if he will be ready to start the 2012 season. Cuddyer and Mayberry both have experience at first base, and can hold down the fort until Howard comes back. But if there is a chance that the Phillies can dump Howard and his huge contract, then Amaro may possibly be able to work his magic again and make a surprise signing of Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder, much like he did with Cliff Lee. Now let's be honest here, even if Howard was healthy, that would have been a long shot to happen,  but since he is hurt, it's pretty much impossible. But hey, it's something to think about. After all, Fielder and Pujols have been better clutch players in not just the regular season, but (more in Pujols' case) the postseason too.... A LOT MORE IN THE POSTSEASON.

Shortstop: Jose Reyes is an option, but he is injury proned and in all honesty would not be a good fit in Philadelphia. The Phillies have said that minor league prospect Freddy Galvis will need at least another year in the minors. Re-signing Rollins is the team's best bet.

Bullpen: The Phillies' bullpen is pretty solid, but with the possibility of Madson going elsewhere, the team may need a new closer. Amaro said in the end of season press conference that if Madson left, they would most likely look outside of the orginization for a closer. There are quite a few good closers that the Phillies can pursue in the off-season should Madson leave. Heath Bell (San Diego), Jose Valverde (Detroit), Matt Caps (Minnesota), Joe Nathan (Minnesota), Francisco Cordero (Cinncinati), Jonathan Papelbon (Boston), and Kyle Farnsworth (Tampa Bay) are all free agents closers who are available.

Ruben Amaro Jr. and the Phillies appear to be heading into a very busy off-season. The team that won a franchise record 102 games, still has much to improve on.

One thing is clear, many tough decisions lie ahead for Amaro.

On October 29, 2008 the Phillies made history

    October 29, 2011

Three years ago today, the Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series, ending their 28 year championship drought and the city's 25 year long drought. This team took the baseball world by storm in 2008. They refused to give up, even when the Mets, the surprising Tampa Bay Rays, and bad weather tried to stand in their way. 2008 will always be remembered by Philadelphia sports fans, and make no mistake, this team gave us all great memories.

    Update on injured Phils

    October 29, 2011

The Phillies have posted an article on their site that provided updates on the progress of injured players.

    From the Phillies website:

"Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard had stitches removed from his left ankle on Tuesday, 13 days after he underwent surgery for a ruptured Achilles. He's begun a rehab program in Philadelphia and can partake in partial weight-bearing activities.

Philadelphia hopes Howard is healed in time for April, although he's just one of many whose health the club has to monitor this offseason. The Phillies announced a slew of health updates on Friday.

Third baseman Placido Polanco had a follow-up exam with Dr. William Meyers on Wednesday after undergoing double sports hernia surgery and is continuing his rehab in Miami.

Left-hander Cole Hamels had stitches removed from his left elbow (loose bodies) on Thursday and is continuing his rehab in Philadelphia. Hamels had a follow-up exam to his hernia surgery Friday with Dr. Ernest Rosato -- exactly two weeks after the procedure -- and has been cleared to get back to his offseason program, as tolerated.

Right fielder Hunter Pence is also rehabbing from sports hernia surgery in Philadelphia, and he has a follow-up appointment with Dr. Meyers scheduled for next week.

Right-hander Jose Contreras (right forearm strain) was seen by Dr. Michael Ciccotti on Oct. 20, and he is slated to begin isometric forearm strengthening next week. If he continues on his current path, he can start throwing at the beginning of January.

Rounding out the update was Ross Gload, whose right hip was evaluated by Dr. Bryan Kelly in New York on Oct. 18. Although a small tear was diagnosed in the hip during the season, Dr. Kelly recommended Gload pass on surgery in favor of rehab."

    Lidge, Oswalt's 2012 options declined

    October 24, 2011

It really isn't any surprise, in fact this was expected as soon as the season ended.

The Phillies have chosen to deny relief pitcher Brad Lidge's and starting pitcher Roy Oswalt's contract options for the 2012 season.

Oswalt and Lidge are now eligible for free agency, but that doesn't neccesarily mean they won't be able to return to the Phillies.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. stated earlier this afternoon, that he would stay in contact with them over the off-season, and would be happy to bring them back to the team for next year.

The price to buyout Lidge's and Oswalt's options were $1.5 million and $2 million respectively. Had the Phillies not bought out their options, they would have owed Lidge $12.5 million and Oswalt $16 million for the 2012 season.

Buying out their contracts was clearly the better move considering the Phillies have $110.5 million devoted to nine players already.

Although their tenures with the Phillies may not be over just yet, both Lidge and Oswalt have experienced great runs in their time with Philadelphia.

Lidge was injured for much of the 2011 season. He only had 25 outings, with an 0-2 record, but had a 1.40 ERA. It didn't seem like at times during the season, but Lidge got the job done.

But when you think of Brad Lidge, you have to think of his spectacular 2008 campaign. In his first year with the team, Lidge went 48 for 48 in save oppurtunities, and to cap it all off, he closed out game five of the World Series by striking out former Tampa Bay Ray Eric Hinske in three pitches, to give the Phillies their first world championship in 28 years and the city's first in 25.

Roy Oswalt was shipped over from Houston in a trade deadline deal in the 2010 campaign, the former ace of the Astros joined Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels to create one of the most fearsome rotations in baseball.

In 2011, that rotation became even more of a nightmare to the rest of the majors when the Phillies signed another ace in Cliff Lee.

Though he experienced some back problems and some personal issues over the season, his pitching helped create one of the best starting rotations in the history of baseball.
