About last night

September 29, 2011

A lot happened last night, not just for the Phillies, but all around baseball.

Last night saw two teams, who a month ago looked like they had their respective wild card spots wrapped up, completely collapse and miss out on the playoffs. The Red Sox blew a one run lead in the ninth to lose to the Orioles 4-3, and eventually lose their playoff spot. The Braves. Well, we'll get to them in a second.

Two games that held playoff implications last night, had to be decided in extras.

And the Tampa Bay Rays, down 7-0 after seven innings against the Yankees, rallied back to tie it up and eventually win it 8-7 in the twelfth thanks to a walk off home run by Evan Longoria. Thanks to the Red Sox loss, the Rays were able to take the AL wild card spot with the win.

It has been an incredible regular season this year, and last night was an incredible conclusion to it.

The Phillies' regular season finale was no less thrilling.

Going into last night's game, the Phillies had the chance to set two club records. They had the oppurtunity to be the first team in franchise history to have 102 wins in a season with a win against Atlanta. A win also would make Charlie Manuel (645 wins) the leader in most regular season wins as a Phillies manager, surpassing Gene Mauch.

This team made history last night, and they did it in big fashion.

The Atlanta Braves were desperately clinging to their wild card spot, only leading by half a game over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fast forward to the ninth inning, the Braves have a 3-2 lead, Craig Krimbel came in for Atlanta to try and secure the win and get the save.

With the bases loaded, Chase Utley hits a sacrifice fly to left, to score Pete Orr from third and tie the game up at three.

Kimbrel had been phenomonal as the braves closer all year, but last night, he faultered.

On to the thirteenth inning, with runners on first and third, Hunter Pence singled into shallow right to score Brian Schneider from third and put the Phillies up 4-3.

It would prove to be the winning run, as David Herndon finished the game by getting the Brave's Freddie Freeman to ground into a double play.

The Cardinals, trailing by half a game in the wild card standings going into last night, beat the Houston Astros 8-0, and won the wild card spot.

The Phillies not only set a franchise record in regular season wins, and Manuel setting the franchise record in mangaerial wins, but knocked their divison rival out of the playoffs.

The Phillies will face the Cardinals in the NLDS. The series begins with game one on Saturday.

Phillies at Braves: Game 3 Notes (Regular Season Finale)

September 28, 2011

So here it is, game number 162. It has been an incredible regular season for the Phillies, and now their focus is on the postseason. As for the Braves, a month ago it seemed like they had the wild card spot wrapped up. Now, their fighting for their playoff lives with the St. Louis Cardinals only a half game behind them. Tonight, the Brave's season is on the line. As for the Phillies, it's simple, head in to the playoffs hot.

Phillies beat Braves 7-1, tie franchise record with 101 wins

September 28, 2011

The Braves were holding on to the wild card spot by a game going in to last night's game. The Phillies, with help from a St. Louis Cardinals win over the Houston Astros 13-6, took away their wild card lead.

Roy Oswalt, in his last start before the playoffs, shutout the Braves for six innings. He only allowed three hits and a walk, while striking out four.

Chase Utley, Hunter Pence, and Jimmy Rollins homered in the Phil's blowout win over Atlanta.

The Phils have put that rough eight game losing streak behind them, for they have won their last three games.

The most reassuring thing to happen in last night's game though, was Antonio Bastardo's relief appearance in the eighth inning.

Bastardo has had a lot of struggles during September, and suspiscion arose that he might have been tipping his pitches, but there were no concerns this time.

For the first time since September 2, Bastardo threw a scoreless inning. He made it a quick 1, 2, 3 inning, getting Michael Bourn to strikeout swinging to end the eighth.

Last night's win was the Phillie's 101st of the season, tying the franchise record. It's also Charlie Manuel's 645th regular season win as the Phillie's manager tying him with Gene Mauch for the franchise record.

The team has the oppurtunity to set those records tonight with a win against the Braves in the regular season finale.

Hamels solid, but gets no support in loss

September 24, 2011

So now the streak is at seven. Seven....Straight....Losses.

Since clinching the NL East last week, the Phillies have not been able to do anything. That continued today.

Cole Hamels pitched a great game. The only mistake Hamels made was giving up a solo homer to pinch hitter Valentino Pascucci in the seventh.

Up until that point, Hamels was throwing a shutout, and he finished with 7.0 innings pitched, with four hits and an earned run allowed. He walked three and struckout seven.

The Phillies offense was only able to manage one run against the Met's knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who carried a no hitter in to the seventh.

With one out, Shane Victorino doubled to left to break up the no hit bid. Then Ryan Howard, who was in the lineup for the first time since the division clincher, singled to center to drive in Victorino.

After seven innings the game was tied at one. In the bottom of the eight, Brad Lidge pitched in relief of Hamels.

After shortstop Jose Reyes flew out to Victorino in center, Lidge allowed a single to second baseman Ruben Tejada. Tejada stole second, then Lidge gave up a double to third baseman David Wright that drove in Tejada to make it 2-1 Mets.

The Phillies lost by a final of 2-1, extending their losing streak to seven games since clinching the division.

Brad Lidge received the loss, he is now 0-2 this season. New York's Bobby Parnell (4-6) got the win, even though he pitched only a third of an inning to end the eighth.

The Phil's offense were only able to get four hits off the Met's pitching.

The Phillies are the first team to win 98 games and have a seven game losing streak in Major Leagu Baseball history.

The 1904 New York Giants were the former record holders, losing six straaight. They did not win the World Series that year, because there was none. But they did win the National League.

Here is a better stat, the Phillies now hold the longest losing streak after clinching a division title, surpassing the 1987 Minnesota Twins, who lost five straight after clinching the division. The '87 Twins did win the World Series that year.

Historical stats aside, the Phightin' Phils haven't been showing any fight since winning the NL East. It's extremely frustrating to see a team this good play this poorly, and with the start of the playoffs quickly approaching, you just wish they would snap out of it and get hot again.

Hopefully this team can find a way to flip the switch and start winning again once the playoffs start.

The Phillies will go back at it tonight for the second game of today's doubleheader. I realize I have said this a lot over the past week, and their only motivation right now is to be playoff ready, but maybe they will show some life and get back on the winning track tonight.

Phillies at Mets: Game 1 (Doubleheader) Notes

September 23, 2011

Last night's game will be played today as part of a day-night doubleheader after heavy rain showed no signs of stopping.

The Phillies are hoping to end their six game losing streak at Citi Field today. This is the Phillies worst losing streak since June 16-21, 2009.

The Phillies are looking for some wins, and Charlie Manuel finally having his everyday lineup back helps tremendously.

Pitching Matchup

Other Notes
- Rightfielder Hunter Penceis expected to return to the lineup today. Pence has been out since Tuesday with mild patellar tendon strain.
- First baseman Ryan Howard also returns to the lineup today for the first time since clinching the NL East last week. Howard has been sitting out with left hell bursitis. He received a cortisone shot on Monday to help relieve the pain.

Phillies, Mets rained out, doubleheader Saturday

Septmber 23, 2011

The opener of the Phillies, Mets series at citi field was rained out last night. To make up for last night's game, they will be playing a doubleheader today.

Game one will start at 1:10 PM, followed by the night game at 7:10 PM.

The first pitch for Sunday's game will be moved up from 1:10 PM to 2:10 PM as a result of the changed schedule.

Last night's probables, Philadelphia's Cole Hamels (14-9, 2.80 ERA) and New York's R.A. Dickey (8-13, 3.35 ERA), will be pitching in game one of the doubleheader.

Joe Blanton (1-2, 5.30 ERA) will make his first start for the Phillies since May 14. Blanton was on the disabled list with an elbow injury. He made three relief appearances since coming off the DL.

Blanton will face the Mets Dillon Gee (12-6, 4.48 ERA) in the night cap of the doubleheader.

This is the Phillies fifth rainout this season, and their third doubleheader this month.

Good came from this rainout though. Hunter Pence is expected to return today, and Chase Utley was given the night off last night, but since there was no game, the Phillies didn't go without him in the lineup. Charlie Manuel now has his everyday lineup ready to go for today.

Phillies reach attendance milestone

September 23, 2011

When the regular season ends next week, the Phillies will lead Major League Baseball in attendance for the first time in franchise history.

Last night was the Phillies 204th consecutive sellout at Citizens Bank Park, moving their season attendance up to 3,680,718.

The attendance is averaging 45,441 people per game this year.

The New York Yankees are second in 2011 season attendance with 3,505,511 total. With three games left to play though, the Yankees will not be able to catch up.

Great job Phillies fans, keep up the support and help continue to keep this team great!

Zagurski traded to Arizona

September 23, 2011

The Phillies traded left-handed pitcher Mike Zagurski to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a player that is yet to be named.

Zagurski (28) was 1-0 with a 6.28 ERA in 37 games over the past three seasons with Philadelphia. He had a 5.40 ERA in four games with the Phillies this season.

In 46 games this year with Triple A Lehigh Valley, Zagurski was 4-0 with 11 saves and a 2.65 ERA.

Phillies lose..... again

September 23, 2011

Six straight losses, concerns are growing, and so is frustration. The Phillies ended their final homestand of the season with a 6-1 loss to the Nationals, who completed a four game sweep of the Phils.

Brown likely headed for instructional league

September 22, 2011

Outfielder Dominic Brown will likely be sent down to the instructiona league, according to CSN Philly.com's Jim Salisbury.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has mentioned recently that he wants Brown to become a left fielder, but he will need to work at the position in order to do so.

Brown will probably not start any of the remaining games in the regular season, and will probably not have a spot on the postseason roster as well.

Nationals at Phillies: Game 4 Notes

Phillies lose fifth straight

September 22, 2011

The Phillies slump continued last night, losing to the Nationals 7-5.  They're still winless after clinching their fifth consecutive NL East title.

The Phillies five game losing streak is the worst one this season, and the first time they lost five straight since May 22-27 of last year.

Charlie Manuel isn't concerned just yet, and neither is shortstop Jimmy Rollins.

The Phillies will have a series against the Mets then the Braves, after this series with the Nationals is over.

Rollins expects the team to snap out of their funk over the next two series. Especially when Atlanta's playoff hopes hang on beating the Phillies.

"That's when you want to turn it on," said Rollins. " It's another team potentially in the playoffs needing to win and they will give it their all. It kind of brings out the best in you."

Phils' slump continues

September 21, 2011

The Phillies have lost their fourth straight game since clinching the NL East. They were swept in yesterday's double header against Washington. Game one ended in a 4-3 loss in the 10th inning.

In game two, the result was no better, it actually was worse. The Phillies bats continued their silence in a 3-0 loss last night. This hangover has lasted a bit too long.

Pence given time to rest

September 21, 2011

Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly.com has reported that rightfielder Hunter Pence has a "mild strain of the patellar tendon."

Pence left yesterday afternoon's game after the sixth inning, walking with a noticeable limp, after reaching first on a base hit.

Pence did not play in the second game of the doubleheader last night, and had an MRI earlier today.

He will not be playing in tonight's game, but is expected to return to the lineup this weekend.

It was revealed that Pence has patellar tendinitis in his left knee, but it's not anything new to him. In fact, it's not even a concern, "I’ve had it forever. It just flared up a little."

Starters rest, Phils lose to Nats in 10 4-3

September 20, 2011

The Phillies lost game one of today's day-night doubleheader to the Washington Nationals 4-3 in extras (10).

Charlie Manuel kept most of his regulars out of the lineup for today's game. Shane Victorino an Hunter Pence were the only everyday starters in the lineup. The rest of the lineup consisted of Wilson Valdez, John Mayberry Jr.,  Michael Martinez, Brian Schnieder, Pete Orr, John Bowker, and Eric Katz.

Both Pence and Victorino left the game after the sixth. Pence created some cause for concern when he walked with a noticable limp after reaching first on a base hit.

According to Manuel, Pence told him he was fine. I will keep you updated as soon as more details emerge.

The second game of the doubleheader between the Phillies and Nationals starts at 7:05. Washington will send Ross Detwiler (2-5) to the mound against Philadelphia's Cliff Lee (16-7).

Phillies make late push, clinch home field

September 20, 2011

The Phillies made a late push to try and win last night against St. Louis. However, the Cardinals were able to hold off the Phils to escape with the 4-3 win, while keeping their playoff hopes alive.

The Brewers lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-2 yesterday, so even though the Phils lost, they did clinch home field advantage in the playoffs.

Cardinals at Phillies: Game 3 Notes

September 18, 2011

The Phillies beat the Cardianls to clinch the NL East last night, but they still have something left to play for in the regular season. The magic number for home field advantage in the playoffs is at two. Phialdelphia could have had the oppurtunity to clinch it tonight with a win and a Milwaukee loss, but the Brewers beat the Cinncinati Reds 8-1 earlier today. The magic number for home field advantage will go down to one if the Phillies win tonight.

Meanwhile the Cardinals are desperately trying to keep their playoff hopes alive. After taking the series opener in extras, St. Louis cut the Atlanta Braves lead in the wild card standings to 3.5 games. However, the Braves and Brewers both won yesterday, and the loss put the Cardinals back 4.5 games in the wild card and 6.5 games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central. The Brewers win today puts St. Louis seven games back of the NL Central. The Braves lost to the New York Mets 7-5, so the Cardinals are four games back of the wild card going in to tonight's game.

Phils win NL East for 5th straight time, Pence leads celebration

September 18, 2011

Pence's Proverb #2: "Let's pop bottles!"

After the Phillies sealed their fifth consecutive NL East crown, the players waited for their starting rightfielder to arrive in the clubhouse and kickoff the celebration.

Hunter Pence, who has never experienced the playoffs before, will finally have his chance.

Much like last year, the Phillies waited for the ones who never experienced the playoffs before to kick off the division championship celebration. In 2010 it was Roy Halladay. In 2011 it was Pence.

Pence grabbed a bottle of champagne and started jumping around, drenching his teammates.

Winning five straight division titles is a phenomenal milestone, but the Phillies celebrated with a been there done that attitude.

All throughout the celebration, everyone on the team refered to the division title as simply "the first step" to their ultimate goal. All this team wants to do is win the World Series.

The Phillies have 12 games left to play in the regular season. It's expected that Charlie Manuel will continue to play his starters, but will give them a little more rest over the next two weeks, and  give players like John Mayberry Jr. and Michael Martinez more at-bats.

At the same time, Manuel will be giving pitchers Joe Blanton, Joe Savery, and Justin DeFratus chances to pitch in relief over the remainder of the season, and possibly earn a spot on the postseason roster.

Outfielders Dominic Brown and Brandon Moss have also been called up from the minors to play in the last 12 games of the regular season.

Now to the game that clinched the division last night.

Roy Oswalt pitched an excellent game last night, striking out seven batters and only allowing five hits over seven shutout innings.

Hunter Pence doubled to left field to score Jimmy Rollins and move Ryan Howard up to third in the first inning, putting the Phillies up 1-0 over the Cardianls.

In the fourth with the bases loaded, Jake Westbrook walked Shane Victorino. Placido Polanco scored from third to put the Phils up 2-0.

Then in the sixth, Shane Victorino blasted a solo homer off Kyle McClellan to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead.

Michael Stutes replaced Roy Oswalt in the eighth. After getting the first two outs, Stutes gave up singles to Jon Jay and Albert Pujols. Lance Berkman singled in the next at-bat to score Jay, followed by a single by David Freese that scored Pujols to put the Cardinals within one run.

But Brad Lidge replaced Stutes with two outs, to get rightfielder Allen Craig to ground out to second and stop the Cardinals rally.

On to the bottom fo the eighth, after Ruiz reached 2nd base on an error and Rollins (who had a 4 for 4 night) singled. Shane Victorino knocked in his thrid RBI of the night with a single to center that scored Ruiz from third. The Phillies were up now 4-2.

In the next at-bat Chase Utley was hit by a pitch from Marc Rzepczynski, that loaded the bases.

After Ryan Howard struck out and St. Louis sent in Octavio Dotel to replace Rzepczynski, Hunter Pence reached first on an infield single that scored Rollins from third and made it 5-2 Phils. The bases remained loaded.

Then Raul Ibanez "blew the top off the joint" as Tom McCarhty said, hitting a grand slam in to the right field seats, to give the Phils a 9-2 lead. The fans were fired up and at that point, the champagne was on ice and the plastic was up in the locker room.

Ryan Madson came in to pitch the ninth, and quickly recorded the first two outs before giving up a single to St. Louis' second baseman Ryan Theriot.

But Madson bounced back and got shortstop Rafael Furcal to hit a bouncing groundball to second. Utley barehanded the ball and threw it to Howard at first for the final out.

The Phanatic ran out on the field with the 2011 NL East pennant, the players and coaches shook hands on the field for the 98th victory of the year, then the celebration began.

Triple A players called up to Philadelphia

September 17, 2011

The Phillies made some moves with their minor league system on Friday.

Outfielder Dominic Brown has been called back up along with right handed pitcher Justin DeFratus from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Philadelphia also selected the contracts of left handed pitcher Joe Savery, catcher Eric Kratz, and outfielder Brandon Moss (All of them also from Triple-A Lehigh Valley).

According to Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki, Triple-A manager and former Phil Ryne Sandberg will be moving up to the Phillies dugout for the rest of the season.

Right handed pitcher Drew Naylor, and left handed pitchers Mike Zagurski and Juan Perez have been designated for assignment in order to make space on the 40-man roster.

Braves beat Mets 1-0, Phillies need win to clinch

September 17, 2011

If the Phillies want to clinch the division tonight, their going to have to beat the Cardinals to do so.

The Braves shutout the Mets 1-0 at Turner Field. Tim Hudson went eight innings, striking out 10 and only allowing four hits. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 45th save of the season.

Chipper Jones produced the lone run of the game in the eighth, with an RBI single to center, that scored Jason Heyward.

Going in to tonight's game against St. Louis, the Phillies' magic number is just one.

Roy Oswalt (7-9, 3.85 ERA) will be on the mound tonight against the Cardinals' Jake Westbrook (12-8, 4.60 ERA).

The Cardinals won in extras last night, let's hope the Phillies can bounce back and get the win.

Phillies lose in extras 4-2, Celebration delayed

September 17, 2011

After 11 innings, the Phillies were not able to pull off the win against St. Louis to capture their fifth consecutive NL East crown.

The Phillies lost 4-2 and the Braves lossed to the Mets 12-2, so now the magic number is down to just one. The Braves play the Mets this afternoon, so the Phillies can win the division before they even play if Atlanta loses.

Michael Schwimer received his first Major League loss, after giving up two runs in the 11th, the first coming off the Cardinals Adron Chambers, who hit an RBI single to score Rafael Furcal for his first big league hit.

Vance Worley only gave up one run in the six innings he threw, but the only run support he had was from a double by John Mayberry Jr. that scored Placido Polanco.

Antonio Bastardo gave up a solo home-run to cathcer Yadier Molina (13) in the eigth that put the Cardinals up 2-1.

But in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Ryan Howard came in to pinch hit and hit a double to right. Michael Martinez was sent in to pinch run for Howard.

In the next at bat, Carlos Ruiz reached second bas when St. Louis right fielder Corey Patterson dropped a fly ball hit by Ruiz. Michael Martinez would score on the erroe to tie the game 2-2.

Vote for Ryan Howard to receive the Roberto Clemente Award

September 16, 2011

First baseman Ryan Howard is a nominee for the 2011 Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes players for their charity work off the field.

Phillies fans, make sure you cast your vote. I will be leaving the link to the ballot in this article and on the blog itself.

"Ryan Howard established The Ryan Howard Family Foundation in 2009 with the mission of improving the quality of life of others, in particular disadvantaged youth and families through the development and implementation of programs that advance education, nutrition, physical fitness and socioeconomic status. The Foundation donated $150,000 to a revitalization project supported by neighborhood leaders and the Fairmount Park Conservancy. The project included the restoration of a baseball field and provided equipment and uniforms to a Philadelphia neighborhood plagued by violence.

Ryan also works with the United Negro College Fund. In 2010, The Ryan Howard Foundation awarded $90,000 in scholarships to college-bound students in the Philadelphia and St. Louis metropolitan areas. In addition, Ryan also supports the Police Athletic League, ALS Association, the Philadelphia Futures, Centers for Abused Children, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Cure for Asthma, Celebrity Servers, UNICEF, Make-A-Wish® Foundation, Phillies Wives Annual Pro-Pack Silent Auction, Pennsylvania SPCA, Arthritis Foundation of Eastern Philadelphia, and Camp Erin."

Howard out of the lineup tonight

September 16, 2011

According to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly.com, first baseman Ryan Howard will not start in tonight's game against the Cardinals. John Mayberry Jr. will take over at first.

Howard has been out of the lineup four times in the past nine days, dealing with bursitis in his heel/Achillies.

Due to the 12 game lead over the Braves, Charlie Manuel will be giving Howard some rest over the last couple weeks of the season, but Howard is willing to play if he has to.

On top of the rest, there is also the possibility that Howard could receive a cortisone shot to help relieve him of the pain before the start of the postseason.

Major League Baseball releases 2012 schedule

September 16, 2011

The Phillies' 2012 schedule was released two days ago by Major League Baseball.

The Phils will be opening up the season on the road against Pittsburgh on April 5, followed by their home opener on April 9 against the renamed Miami Marlins.

Here is the full schedule

Lee almost gets the shutout, Phils win in 10th

September 16, 2011

Cliff Lee was strong for eight and two thirds innings and it seemed like he would easily earn his seventh shutout of the year. With two outs in the ninth, Lee had an 0-2 count on Marlins first baseman Jose Lopez.

On the next pitch, Lopez hit a solo homer to left to tie the game at one. So the Phillies were heading to extras.

In the bottom of the 10th, after Michael Martinez was walked, Ryan Howard stepped up and hit a walk-off double in to center for the win.

The Phillies sweep the Marlins in the doubleheader, and the magic number to clinch the NL East is now down to 2.
