Players signed to minor league contracts

Pitchers Scott Elarton, Brian Sanches, Pat Misch, Raul Valdes, catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, infielders Pete Orr, Kevin Frandsen, and outfielder Scott Podsednik have been signed to minor league contracts by the Phillies, according to beat writer Todd Zolecki.

These moves won't create a big splash (in fact, they make a very little one at that), but they could help during the course of the season.

These players can be called up and fill in positions should the Phillies need to add players to the roster.

Orr already has experience playing infield for the Phillies in 2010 and 2011.

Podsednik, 35, has 10 years of experience on the major league level. He hit .297 in 39 games for the Dodgers in 2010. That was the last time he played in the majors.

Podsednik played in the Phillies minor league system last year, but was limited to just 14 games with Lehigh Valley.

He can play anywhere in the outfield, so, if needed, he can provide more depth off the bench.

The rest of the players on the list have little major league experience, but all of them have invitations to spring training.

Mathieson headed east

According to John Finger of CSNPhilly.com, the Phillies released right-hander Scott Mathieson.

The reliever is to sign a deal with the Yomuri Giants, so he will be heading to Asia.

Pence happy about Wigginton trade

Hunter Pence seems very happy about the trade that brought former teammate Ty Wigginton to the Phillies, just look at his Twitter posts.

He's really just "Wiggy," but he pounds red bull and is a really fun teammate and very knowledgeable baseball savvy guy.

 

 

Sounds like the Phillies picked up a good baseball mind, and someone who will be right at home inside the clubhouse. Also sounds like the Phillies got a player that really likes Red Bull.

 

Wigginton spent part of the 2007 season and the entire 2008 season playing for the Houston Astros.

 

 

 

 

New CBA agreement reached, NL and AL MVPs

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have reached a new 5-year labor agreement on Tuseday, which gives Major League Baseball a span of 21 years of labor peace.

The new agreement brings some notable rule changes on free agents, the draft,  drug testing, social media use for players, and the postseason format.

Here are some of the most notable ones:

It appears that, as early as next season, there will be two wild card teams who will play in a one game series to advance to the division series.

Instant replay will expand to calls on fair or foul balls, but calls on the bases still cannot be reviewed.

Also, the Houston Astros will move from the NL Central to the AL West in 2013, but tat was agreed to by the owners earlier.

Braun wins NL MVP, Verlander wins in AL

It was really just a two horse race for NL MVP. Milwaukee Brewer's left fielder Ryan Braun and Los Angeles Dodger's center fielder Matt Kemp were the only two players in the race to finish with 300 points in the voting.

But in the end, Braun came out on top.

Braun batted .332 with 33 home runs, 111 RBI's, a .397 on base percentage, and a .597 slugging percentage. He received 20 1st place votes, and 12 2nd place votes for 388 points.

Kemp batted .324, with 39 home runs, 126 RBI's, a .399 on base percentage, and a .586 slugging percentage. He received 10 1st place votes, 16 2nd place votes, and 6 3rd plce votes.

Compared to Braun, Kemp had the edge statistically, but the vote probably was decided on the fact that Braun helped his team win the NL Central, and get to the NLCS.

Braun is the first Brewer to win an MVP award since Robin Yount won his second in 1989.

In the American League, Detroit Tiger's starting pitcher  Justin Verlander was awarded MVP a week after winning the AL Cy Young Award.

Verlander is the first starting pitcher to win AL MVP since Roger Clemens did it in 1986.

Verlander received 13 1st place votes, and had 280 total points. Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury finished in second with 242 points, but only 4 1st place votes.

There was the arguement that a pitcher should not win MVP, but when you look at Verlander's stats, it's easy to disprove it.

Verlander was absolutely dominant in 2011, leading the Majors in wins (24), strikeouts (250), and ERA (2.40). Oh yeah, and he threw a no-hitter.

Cuddyer still option, 'slow' talks with Rollins

The Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon, and acquired Ty Wigginton. Now the Phillies biggest issue is to address the hole at shortstop.

According to MLBTradeRumors.com, the Phillies have had discussions with Jimmy Rollins, but GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said that talks have been "slow", and that a deal, most likely, will not get done until after the winter meetings.

The site also reports that signing Michael Cuddyer is still a possibility for the Phillies, but it would have to be for a deal that is team friendly.

Development staff announced, Sandberg staying

The Phillies announced their player development staff for the 2012 season. Ryne Sandberg is listed as the manager for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (Triple-A affiliate).

Sandberg has had talks with the St. Louis Cardinals about their managing job, but they filled it with Mike Matheny. The Cubs had an opening too, but they wanted Major League coaching experience, something Sandberg does not have.

Now, it is official. Sandberg will remain in the Phillie's minor league system for now.

Phils acquire Ty Wigginton

The Phillies traded for utility player Ty Wigginton from the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies will either receive cash or a player to be named later.

 Wigginton, 34, hit .242, with 15 home runs, and 47 RBI's, in 130 games for Colorado in 2011. He has a .265 average for his 10 season long career.

On the defensive side, Wigginton played games at first base, third base, left field, and right field, last season. He also has experience at second base.

Wigginton is signed for the 2012 season for $4 million, but the Rockies are paying half of his salary, so the Phillies only have to pay $2 million.  Their is als an option year for 2013 in Wigginton's contract that is also worht $4 million.

Before the trade, it was reported that the Phillies were actively pursuing free agent Michael Cuddyer, for much of the same reasons they acquired Wigginton. But now, it is easy to argue that the Phillies will no longer pursue Cuddyer.

Cuddyer, 33, is a better offensive player, but the price to sign him may have been too steep for the organization, after the signing of closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Wigginton does not quite match the stats of Cuddyer, but is a far more affordable option, and should still be a good addition regardless.

Prospects added to 40-man roster

The Phillies added four players to their minor league system to protect them from being in the Rule 5 Draft next month.

Righthander Phillippe Aumont, lefthander Jake Diekman, outfielder Tyson Gillies, and cathcer Sebastian Valle.

Aumont (22) and Gillies (23) were prospects aquired in 2009, in the trade that sent Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners (Remember how much that one hurt? But he is back with the Phillies, so it all worked out).

Diekman (25), according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, has some control issues, but cna develop into a situational or full inning reliever.

Valle (21), is the Phillie's top catching prospect.

Big 3 finish in top 5, Schneider signs deal

Los Angeles Dodger's pitcher Clayton Kershaw won the NL Cy Young Award, but the voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America clearly shows (as if you needed any other proof) that the Phillies rotation dominated the regular season.

Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels all finished in the top five in voting.

Halladay (19-6, 2.35 ERA) came in 2nd place with 4 1st place votes, 21 2nd place votes, and 7 3rd place votes for 133 points.

Lee (17-8, 2.40 ERA) finished right behind him in 3rd place, with 5 2nd place votes, 17 3rd place votes, 9 4th place votes, and 1 5th place vote for 90 points.

Hamels (14-9, 2.79 ERA) took 5th place with 2 4ht place votes, and 13 5ht place votes, for 17 points.

Kershaw (21-5, 2.28 ERA) won the award with 27 1st place votes, 3 2nd place votes, and 2 3rd place votes, for 207 points.

The Arizona Diamondback's Ian Kennedy (21-4, 2.88 ERA) came in 4th with 1 1st place vote, 3 2nd place votes,  6 3rd place votes, 18 4th place votes, and 3 5th place votes for 76 points.

Detroit Tiger's ace Justin Verlander (25-4, 2.40 ERA) won the AL Cy Young, but no surprise there, considering his dominance in 2011. The question with him is if he can win the AL MVP.

Schneider signs one year deal

Brian Schneider will back up Carlos Ruiz for another year.

Schneider signed a one-year, $800,000 deal with incentives that can make the deal worth $1 million in total, according to CSNPhilly.com's John Finger.

Schneider (35) will most likely continue catching for Vance Worley. The 12 year veteran has worked well with Worley playing a key part in the young pitcher's success thus far.

Hamels has to be addressed later

Cole Hamels will be a free agent next year, but with the signing of Jonathan Papelbon and with the needs at shortstop, possibly left field, and definitely hitting still needed to be addressed, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. is in no rush to make offers to Hamels now.

Sandberg probably staying put
The Cardinals hired Mike Matheny to be their new manager, and the Cubs want someone who already has major-league coaching experience to manage their team.

So it looks like Phillie's minor-league manager Ryne Sandberg will be staying with the orginization.

Manuel finishes 4th in Manager of the Year voting

Charlie Manuel finished fourth in the National League Manager of the Year voting.

Manuel received one 2nd place vote and seven 3rd place votes for 10 points.

Diamondback's manager Kirk Gibson won the award in the NL, with 28 1st place votes and four 2nd place votes for 152 total points.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke (92 points), and (now former) Cardinals manager Tony La Russa (24 points) finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Tampa Bay Ray's manager Joe Maddon won the voting in the AL, with 26 1st place votes and one 2nd place vote for 133 points.

Both Maddon and Gibson managed their teams to comebacks that landed them a spot in the postseason.

Gibson's Diamondbacks took control of the NL West in August and kept it through September, after the San Francisco Giants were in first for a good part of the summer.

Maddon's Rays made their comeback at the end of the season, taking the AL Wild Card spot from the Boston Red Sox, after Boston suffered a historic collapse.

Phils make deal, close to another

According to CSNPhilly.com's  Jim Salisbury, the Phillies have acquired minor-league reliever Adam Worthington from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The acquisition completes a trade that sent reliever Mike Zagurski to Arizona back in September.

The 24 year old Worhtington was the Diamondbacks 20th round pick in the 2009 draft.

Salisbury is also reporting that the Phillies are close to re-signing catcher Brian Schneider.

The deal could be announced over the next day or so.

Schneider has often been credited for doing a goos job catching for Vance Worley in 2011, so it looks like the Phils want to continue that success.

Cespedes has private workout with Phillies

CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury is reporting that the Phillies held a private workout for Yoenis Cespedes on Tuesday.

Former GM Pat Gillick attended the workout in place of Ruben Amaro Jr., who was in Milwaukee for the winter meetings.

Cespedes is a 26 year old Cuban free agent. He is unproven at the Major League level, but is labeled with a $30 million asking price.

The organization has a history of looking at big name free agents. However, it is extremely unlikely that the club will land Cespedes, mainly for the high asking price and the uncertainty that he will be able to live up to the contract.

Papelbon signs deal with Phils

Closer Jonathan Papelbon signed to a four-year $50 million contract on Monday with the Phillies. The contract includes a fifth year option, but he must close 55 games in the fourth year of the contract in order for the option to be available.

The option year is worth $13 million.

Papelbon was a very good and reliable closer during his tenure with the Red Sox. The expectation is that he will do much of the same in Philadelphia, and help them stay as a playoff contender.

Worley finishes third in Rookie of the Year race

Pitcher Vance Worley finished third in the voting for National League Rookie of the Year.

Worley did not receive any first place votes, but got eight second place, and 16 third place votes for a total of 40 points in the voting.

Worley became one of the Phillies biggest surprises in 2011. "The Vanimal" settled in as the fifth starter and finished the season with an 11-3 record with a 3.01 ERA in 21 starts.

Atlanta Brave's closer Craig Kimbrel won the NL Rookie of the Year with 32 first place votes for a total of 160 points.

Tampa Bay Ray's starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson won the award in the American League.

Papelbon agrees to sign with Phillies

* I would like to say I am sorry for not posting anyhting yesterday. I had a lot of school work to get out of the way, and unfortuantely that left me with no time to update the blog. Luckily, there was only one big story to cover, so let's get to right to it.


Closer Jonathan Papelbon has agreed to sign a four-year deal wih the Philadelphia Phillies, pending a physical.

Papelbon's contract is reportedly worth close to $50 million, according to CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury.

The 31 year old closer has spent all six seasons of his career with the Boson Red Sox. First as a strater in 2005, then becoming a closer in 2006. He was part of Boston's 2007 World Series Championship.

In 2011, Papelbon had 31 saves in 63 games, with a 2.94 ERA.

The Red Sox will get the Phillie's first round pick for next year's draft, since Papelbon is a type A free agent.

Multiple sources reported earlier in the week that the Phillies and their free agent closer Ryan Madson had already agreed to a four-year, $44 million deal. But it turned out that both sides never reached an agreement.

Now that Papelbon is the Phillie's closer, Madson probably will not be back with Philadelphia for the 2012 season. It has been a great run for Madson, here in Philadelphia, but it looks like Madson will be in a different uniform come the start of the season.

It was reported early this morning that the Phillies were close to signing Ryan Madson to a four-year deal, but now multiple sources are reporting many different reasons for why the deal was either delayed or called off. Some are even saying that the Phillies have not made an offer to Madson yet, and that Jonathan Papelbon is still in the mix

Madson agrees to 4-year deal, pending approval

Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman posted on his Twitter account that closer Ryan Madson agreed to a four year, $44 million deal with the Phillies, and that the contract is awaiting CEO Daivd Montgomery's approval.

Heyman posted the tweet early Wedenesday morning, which means the deal could have possibly been agreed to late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.


Heyman posted another tweet around the same time, saying that general manger Ruben Amaro Jr. is still awaiting approval.

"after amaro agreed to $44M, 4-yr madson deal, amaro said he'd have to get montgomery's OK, source said. still waiting."

Jim Duquette of MLB.com, reported that the deal Madson agreed to could have a fifth year option.

All the terms of the contract should be revealed as soon as Madson's deal is approved.

Jim Duquette of MLB.com is reporting that the Phillies have a four year, $44 million deal in the works for closer Ryan Madson.

Phillie's beta writer Todd Zolecki reports that the deal could be finalized by the end of this week.

Numerous sources have already said that discussions between Madson and the Phillies have heated up, and Scott Boras, Madson's agent, has said already that Madson is comfortable in Philadelphia and wants to stay with the team.

Madson and shortstop Jimmy Rollins are who the Phillie's made their to priorities to re-sign over the off-season. If this deal falls through, the orginization can check Madson off their to-do list.

Reports were made that disscusions between Ryan Madson and the Phillies were heating up and that it was possible that a deal could be agreed upon very soon.

According to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, free agent closer Jonathan Papelbon is in the mix now.

Salisbury reports that the club is negotiating with Papelbon, Boston's closer for six seasons, along with Madson. He also reports that a deal could be made with one of the two closers very soon (possibly within the next few days).

Salisbury is also reporting that free agent Michael Cuddyer was in Philadelphia on Tuesday for a recruiting visit with the Phillies.


Cuddyer is a good right-handed bat, who can play at multiple positions (like I've said so many times before).  He is very close with Jim Thome (recently signed by the Phillies), after their time as teammates in Minnesota, and he would be a very good fit for the team (again, like I've said so many times before).

Sources confirmed to Salisbury that the Phillies are "eager to sign him," but it is unknown if Cuddyer was presented an offer.

Madson, Phillies pushing for a deal

Multiple sources are reporting that the Phillies and free agent closer Ryan Madson are close to making an agreement.

Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman is reporting that the two sides are working on a multiyear deal. Heyman also wrote that it seems likely now that the Phillies will hold on to their closer a little bit longer.

Phillie's beat writer Todd Zolecki has also reported that discussions between Madson and the Phillies have heated up, and that a possible agreement could be near.

MLB.com and local awards handed out, more to be announced

Individual awards were given out by the MLB.com editors for the Phillies, as well as the orginization's annual franchise awards, that are voted on by the Philadelphia chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

MLB.com awarded first baseman Ryan Howard as the Phillie's Player of the Year.

Pitcher Roy Halladay was chosen as the team's Pitcher of the Year, and fellow pitcher Vance Worley was awarded with Breakout Player of the Year.

The Phillies named center fielder Shane Victorino their MVP and honored him with the Mike Schmidt Award.

Cliff Lee was named the team's most valuable pitcher in winning the Steve Carlton Award.

This news was reported by the Phillie's website, and there is still more awards to be given across Major League Baseball, including Manager of the year (Charlie Manuel is a nomination), Rookie of the Year (Vance Worley is a nomination), and the Cy Young Award (Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee are nominated).

Madson, Phils having "good dialogue"

The Phillies would love to have Ryan Madson back as closer in 2012, and Madson would love to come back to Philadelphia himself.

Madson's agent Scott Boras said, “There are multiple clubs" interested in Madson.

Boras also said that Madson is very interested in re-signing with the Phillies, and that both sides have been speaking to one another.

“We’re having good dialogue with the Phillies. I think Philadelphia is a place he’s comfortable with. It’s a good team. A great place to play. They are a strong candidate on his list.”

Boras refused to reveal if the Phillies or any other teams have made any offers to Madson yet.

Phillies pursuing Michael Cuddyer

The Phillies signed Jim Thome, but now a teammate of his from Minnesota, could possibly be going to Philadelphia with him.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com is reporting that the Phillies are in serious pursuit of Michael Cuddyer.

This makes a lot of sense for the Phillies to go after him.

Cuddyer is a good right handed bat, that would fit well into the Phillies lineup.

Cuddyer can also play at multiple positions if needed. Last year he played games at first base, second base, and left field for the Twins, so he will be able to fill in for Howard at first if he will not be ready for the start of the season, or play at third if Polanco needs rest. If not, he can also platoon with John Mayberry Jr.in left field if that is what the Phillies are planning.

Salisbury said that the signing of Thome can help the Phillies in signing Cuddyer, they both played together the past two seasons in Minnesota, before Thome was claimed off waivers by the Indians.

Thats the only information presented right now, I will keep you updated when more details become available.

Thome returns Philadelphia, signs 1 year deal

Jim Thome is coming back to Philadelphia.

The Phillies have signed the 600 home run club member to a one year deal that is reportedly worth $1.25 million. Thome's contract is pending a physical.

In 2011, Thome spent the season with the Minnesota Twins, then was claimed off trade waivers by the Cleveland Indians after the trade deadline.

Thome hit for a .256 average, with 15 home runs,and 50 RBI's total last season. He also hit his 600th home run and finished the season with 604 total career home runs.

With this signing, the Phillies have a left-handed power bat that they can use off the bench. In addition, Thome can play at first base if needed, in the event that Ryan Howard is not ready in time for the start of the season.

Thome played for the Phillies from 2003-2005. During the 2005 off-season, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox, since Ryan Howard was ready to takeover as the starting first baseman.

Re-signing with Philadelphia also means that Thome will be re-united with his former hitting from early in his career with the Indinas, except now he will be his manager, Charlie Manuel.

Pete Orr signs minor league contract

Yeah, really not a whole lot to say on this one.

The Phillies will hold on to Pete Orr, he agreed to a minor league contract on Thursday.

Orr will most likely jump between Triple-A Lehigh Valley and the Phillies, like he has done for the past two years with Philadelphia.

Not the most exciting move out there (I mean just look at how I wrote this story), but its something to talk about.

Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin was the first person to be interviewed for the job as the Boston Red Sox's manager, after Terry Francona was fired for the Red Sox's collapse in September.

Recently, the St. Louis Cardinals have asked the Phillies for permission to speak with Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg about their own mangerial vacancy since Tony La Russa retired after the Cardinal's improbable World Series championship (that hurts to type).

It is reported that the Cardinals have been granted permission by Phillies to talk to Sandberg, who is a hall of fame player (played for the Phillies and St. Louis' rival Chicago Cubs) and a minor league manger for the Phils since 2007.

Now reports are being made that general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.'s assistant Scott Proefrock will have an interview with the Baltimore Orioles for their general manger position, that was formely filled by Andy McPhail.

Proefrock spent three years as Baltimore's director of baseball administration before joining the Phillies in 2009.

Polanco wins 3rd career Gold Glove

Phillie's third baseman Placido Polanco won his third career Gold Glove award on Tuesday.

In 115 games this season, Polanco had a .977 fielding percentage, which was good enough to win him the best fielding performance at third base.

Polanco won his two previous Gold Gloves with the Detroit Tigers in 2007 and 2009 playing at second base. He is the second player in Major League history to win a Gold Glove at two or more positions, joining Darren Erstad in the exclusive club.

Nine players earned there first Gold Glove award this year. Those players were, Oriole's catcher Matt Wieters, Angel's shortstop Erick Abyar, Royal's left fielder Alex Gordon, Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, and Oriole's right fielder Nick Markakis from the American League. In National League, Red's first baseman Joey Votto, Diamondback's left fielder Gerardo Parra, Dodger's right fielder Andre Eithier, and Dodger's pitcher Clayton Kershaw took home their first.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, Rockie's shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, and Dodger's center fielder Matt Kemp each took home their second Gold Glove.

Along with Polanco, Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez,  Ranger's third baseman Adrian Beltre, White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle, and Red's shortstop Brandon Phillips received their third Gold Glove award.

Cardinal's catcher Yadier Molina, won the fourth Gold Glove in his career.
