One of the most interesting players to note on the roster is relief pitcher Joe Savery.
Savery was the 19th overall pick by the Phillies in the 2007 draft as a pitcher out of Rice University. He had struggles pitching in the minors and converted into a position player.
As a pitcher, Savery was barely able to hit 90 mph on the gun, but during a game that went on for hours, Savery was called into pitch as a last resort.
After not pitching for a few months, he was throwing 94 mph fastballs.
Savery became a pitcher again, and made his way up to Triple-A, then got the call to big leagues in September of last year.
This year, Savery has been regulary throwing in the low 90's, and did enough to earn him a spot on an opening day roster for the first time in his career.
Savery will provide the Phillie's bullpen lefty support, along with Antonio Bastardo.
Also worth noting is that Juan Pierre beat out Scott Podsednik for the last outfield spot on the roster. Podsednik will be playing in Triple-A Lehigh Valley along with infielder Hector Luna and pitcher Raul Valdes for at least the start of the season.
Michael Stutes made the roster, even though he has shoulder soreness.
Also, Freddy Galvis will make his Major League debut, spending time at second base while Chase Utley is out.
