According to MLBTradeRumors.com, the Phillies have agreed to a minor-league deal with infielder Mike Fontenot.

This deal will provide the Phillies with more support in the infield, while Chase Utley and Ryan Howard continue to recover from their injuries.

The 31-year old Fontenot is another good fielder, but is not as good a hitter.

Fontenot hit .227 with 21 RBI's in 85 games, but at least it is an upgrade from Michael Martinez, who has been on the DL since breaking his foot in spring training.

In Fontenot's six-year career, he is a .263 hitter.

Fontenot spent the first five years of his career with the Chicago Cubs, before being traded to the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline in 2010. He spent the rest of 2010 and 2011 with the Giants.

Fontenot was released by the Giants at the end of spring training.
