Cardinals at Phillies: Game 3 Notes

September 18, 2011

The Phillies beat the Cardianls to clinch the NL East last night, but they still have something left to play for in the regular season. The magic number for home field advantage in the playoffs is at two. Phialdelphia could have had the oppurtunity to clinch it tonight with a win and a Milwaukee loss, but the Brewers beat the Cinncinati Reds 8-1 earlier today. The magic number for home field advantage will go down to one if the Phillies win tonight.

Meanwhile the Cardinals are desperately trying to keep their playoff hopes alive. After taking the series opener in extras, St. Louis cut the Atlanta Braves lead in the wild card standings to 3.5 games. However, the Braves and Brewers both won yesterday, and the loss put the Cardinals back 4.5 games in the wild card and 6.5 games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central. The Brewers win today puts St. Louis seven games back of the NL Central. The Braves lost to the New York Mets 7-5, so the Cardinals are four games back of the wild card going in to tonight's game.
