Phillies lose in extras 4-2, Celebration delayed

After 11 innings, the Phillies were not able to pull off the win against St. Louis to capture their fifth consecutive NL East crown.

The Phillies lost 4-2 and the Braves lossed to the Mets 12-2, so now the magic number is down to just one. The Braves play the Mets this afternoon, so the Phillies can win the division before they even play if Atlanta loses.

Michael Schwimer received his first Major League loss, after giving up two runs in the 11th, the first coming off the Cardinals Adron Chambers, who hit an RBI single to score Rafael Furcal for his first big league hit.

Vance Worley only gave up one run in the six innings he threw, but the only run support he had was from a double by John Mayberry Jr. that scored Placido Polanco.

Antonio Bastardo gave up a solo home-run to cathcer Yadier Molina (13) in the eigth that put the Cardinals up 2-1.

But in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Ryan Howard came in to pinch hit and hit a double to right. Michael Martinez was sent in to pinch run for Howard.

In the next at bat, Carlos Ruiz reached second bas when St. Louis right fielder Corey Patterson dropped a fly ball hit by Ruiz. Michael Martinez would score on the erroe to tie the game 2-2.
