Madson blows save in the ninth with walk-off grand slam

Washington, D.C.
August 20, 2011

The Phillies found themselves in another rain delay last night, this time lasting 2 hours, 22 minutes. The Phillies would have been better off if the game was postponed.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Phillies had a 4-2 lead and Ryan Madson was in to close. Madson, who had been successful in 23 of his last 24 save attempts, struggled to get batters out.

Jayson Werth, with an 0-2 count, battled Madson for 10 pitches, before driving a single to left on the 11th pitch.

Danny Espinosa singled to center, moving Werth up to 2nd. Then Jonny Gomes singled on a ground ball in to left, to score Werth and move Espinosa to second, making it a 4-3 game.

Then Wilson Ramos sacrificed himself on a bunt, to move the runners up to 2nd and 3rd.

With one out, and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Madson intentionally walked Jesus Flores to load the bases and try to set up a double play.

With one out and the bases loaded, Ian Desmond singled in to right to score Espinosa, tying the game up 4-4 and keeping the bases loaded.

Madson struck out Rick Ankiel swinging for the second out.

Ryan Zimmerman came up to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in a tie ball game. Zimmerman worked himself into a 3-2 count, then hit a walk-off grand slam into left to win the game for the Nationals 8-4.

"Games like this happen," said pitcher Kyle Kendrick. "He can come back tomorrow, in the same situation, and get it done"

Kendrick started in place of Roy Oswalt last night due to the rain delay, which stopped the game with two outs in the top of the first inning. Oswalt is expected to start tonight against Washington's John Lannan.

Kendrick pitched for six innings, allowing two earned runs off of five hits, one of which was a solo home-run by Wilson Ramos. Kendrick also struck out four and walked one.

Brad Lidge and Antonio Bastardo pitched for a perfect 7th and 8th inning respectively, each striking out one.

The Phillies scored all of four of their runs in the third inning. John Mayberry Jr. brought in the first run by hitting a line drive into left that got past Jonny Gomes, scoring Jimmy Rollins. Mayberry would reach third for a triple.

Mayberry went on to score in the next at-bat thanks to a double hit in to right by Chase Utley. Then Utley reached home in the next at-bat off a single in to center hit by Ryan Howard.

Carlos Ruiz brought in the last run with an RBI single to right field to bring Howard home.

The Nationals scored two runs before their ninth inning rally. A double by Ian Desmond that scored Wilson Ramos in the bottom of the third, and a solo home-run by Ramos in the fiftth.

Nats starter Livan Hernandez continued to pitch after the rain delay, and would go on to pitch four innings, allowing four earned runs off of seven hits and two walks.

Tom Gorzalonney logged in three innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Sean Burnett pitched the top of the eighth, striking out two and walking one.

Todd coffey pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Nationals.

The next game is tonight at 7:05.
