Phils win finale after delay, first to 80 wins

The Phillies defeated the Diamondbacks 4-1 in the series finale after a 2 hour, 17 minute rain delay stopped the game three innings in. The Phils earned their 80th win of the season last night, as they continue to hold on to the best record in the majors at 80-42.

David Herndon (1-2) earned his first win of the year last night (2nd in his career), when he threw three scorless innings, only allowing one hit and striking out four, in relief for Vance Worley, who only pitched the first three innings before the rain delay.

Ryan Madson earned his 23rd save of the year, pitching a scorless 9th. Madson now has 23 saves in 24 attempts.

Michael Stutes pitched in the 7th inning and allowed Arizona their only run, a solo homer by rookie first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt. Stutes also had one strikeout.

Antonio Bastardo pitched a scorless 8th, with two strikeouts.

The scoring started in the 2nd inning, when Raul Ibanez hit a one-out double, then was brought home by Wilson Valdez with an RBI double in to right field to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.

In the third, with Jimmy Rollins on base, John Mayberry Jr. crushed a 2-run shot off of the left field foul pole to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead. Mayberry now has 10 home-runs this year in 73 at-bats.

The Phils' fourth and final run of the night came in the fifth when Chase Utley doubled off of Michah Owings. Utley reached home off a double in left field by Ibanez.

For the Diamondbacks, Ian Kennedy picked up his fourth loss of the year. In three innings of work, Kennedy allowed three runs off of five hits, one of which was the two-run homer by Phillies centerfielder John Mayberry Jr.. Kennedy also walked two and struck out four, he did not return to pitch after the rain delay. Kennedy is now 15-4 this year.

Micha Owings pitched three innings in relief for Arizona, allowing a run off of two hits, with a walk and four strikeouts. Bryan Shaw pitched a scoreless 7th, with a walk and a strikeout.

Joe Paterson and David Hernandez, combined to pitch a scoreless eigth. Paterson pitched for 2/3 of the inning, and Hernandez pitched for the last out.

The Phillies have taken two of three from Arizona. Winning the final game without a few notable starters in the lineup. Centerfielder, Shane Victorino was absent due to a two game suspension, first baseman Ryan Howard (hand), third baseman Placido Polanco (sports hernia), and catcher Carlos Ruiz (groin) sat out with injuries. Catcher Brian Schneider started in place of Ruiz, and with last night's win, the Phillies are now 24-3 when Schneider is catching.
