Phillies aquire left-handed bat John Bowker

August 31, 2011

The Phillies aquired first baseman/outfielder John Bowker from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pirates will receive either cash, or a player to be named.

Bowker, 28, gives the Phils a left-handed bat off the bench, who can also fill in for an injured Ross Gload.

Bowker will be in Cinncinati for tonight's game against the Reds. He is also eligible to be on the postseason roster, since he was acquired before the September 1st waiver deadline.

Bowker played in 19 games for the Pirates this year, batting .235. He spent most of this year in Triple-A Indianapolis, batting .308 in 105 games.

To make room on the roster for Bowker, the Phillies sent relief pitcher Michael Schwimer back down to the minors after last night's game.
