Thome placed on waivers

August 23, 2011

Jim Thome has been placed on trade waivers by the Minnesota Twins.

It has been rumored for some time now that the Phillies have been interested in re-aquiring the newest member of the 600 Home-Run Club. Thome played in Philadelphia from 2003-2005, before he was dealt to the Chicago White Sox.

However, the likelyhood of Thome coming back is slim as 28 other teams would have to pass on Thome before the Phillies have a chance to make a claim.

Thome does have a no-trade clause though, and has the ability to refuse to go to the team that claimed him.

If he does not find a team, he could be put on release waivers, but it's not known if the Twins are willing to release him. However, if Minnesota is willing to do so, the Phillies will have an easier time signing him as a free agent, rather than claiming him off waivers.

Thome has until August 31st to find a team and be eligible for a postseason roster.
